19TH ASIA MEDIA SUMMIT
The Asia Media Summit (AMS) is an annual international media conference organised by AIBD as its flagship event. Every year in consultation with the members, partners and various global media gurus, a theme guides the direction and delivery of the summit. Being a unique broadcasting event in Asia-Pacific, it attracts around 500 top-ranking broadcasters, decision makers, media professionals, regulators, scholars, and stakeholders from within and outside the region. Apart from plenary sessions and pre-summit workshops, Asia Media Summit also provides a platform for intergovernmental dialogues to uplift the benchmarks of the regional media industry.

Workshop on Leveraging AI for Newsroom Automation

Thirty-one media professionals from 17 nations gathered for a transformative workshop on Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Newsroom Automation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Organized by AIBD under the grant given by Hoso Bunka Foundation Japan, the event also served as a pre-summit training activity during the 19th Asia Media Summit 2024. Led by Andy Quested, Chair of ITU-R Working Party 6C and a broadcasting consultant from the United Kingdom, the workshop offered a timely exploration of AI’s potential and challenges in journalism.

The rapid integration of AI into the media industry has revolutionized content production and audience engagement. However, these advancements also raise pressing ethical concerns, including algorithmic bias and opaque decision-making processes. AIBD’s commitment to promoting responsible innovation was evident in this event, which provided participants with the knowledge and tools to navigate these issues while maintaining journalistic integrity.

Participants ranged from journalists and content creators to newsroom managers, all eager to embrace the evolving digital landscape. Through interactive discussions and hands-on sessions, they explored practical strategies for adapting traditional broadcast journalism to a world increasingly dominated by AI technologies. The workshop emphasized the importance of blending technological efficiency with ethical considerations, ensuring that innovation does not come at the expense of public trust.

The opening sessions set the stage by addressing AI’s ethical dimensions. Andy led discussions on the transparency and accountability of AI systems, focusing on how biases—whether in data, algorithms, or cultural contexts—can influence AI-generated content. Participants were guided through methods to identify and mitigate these biases, reinforcing their commitment to fair and accurate reporting.

A key highlight was the introduction of AI-powered tools for automated content creation. These technologies can generate news articles and summaries with remarkable speed, but the sessions stressed the importance of maintaining editorial oversight to uphold journalistic integrity. Participants were exposed to Natural Language Processing (NLP), which enables the analysis of vast text data to identify trends and extract meaningful insights. Through practical exercises, they gained firsthand experience with these tools, underscoring AI’s capacity to streamline newsroom workflows.

The workshop also addressed AI’s role in combating misinformation. Participants were introduced to automated fact-checking tools capable of verifying information and detecting falsehoods in news content. This session resonated with the attendees, emphasizing the need for credibility in an age of rampant misinformation.

As the program advanced, participants learned about the power of data journalism and visualization techniques with the usage of AI to analyze datasets, uncover patterns, and craft compelling visual stories. Andy also demonstrated AI’s applications in multimedia production, showcasing tools for automating tasks such as image recognition, video editing, and transcription. A group project allowed participants to apply these technologies, culminating in the creation of digital reports that were evaluated for their clarity and audience engagement.

Throughout the workshop, ethical considerations remained paramount. Discussions on balancing innovation with accountability highlighted the importance of transparency and trust in AI-driven journalism. The final sessions examined AI’s potential for audience engagement, showing how it can analyze feedback and track sentiment to refine content strategies.

The event concluded with participants reflecting on their newfound knowledge and skills, expressing gratitude to AIBD for facilitating the experience. By equipping media professionals with the tools to embrace AI responsibly, the workshop underscored the importance of ethical innovation in journalism’s rapidly evolving future.
