AIBD/RTB In-Country Online Workshop on Plotting TV Studio Lighting, 28-31 March 2022

Introduction

Lighting Plotting is part of the pre-production process involves carefully thinking to meet the TV production specification. Considerable time is involved in climbing ladders, hanging and connecting lights, and then checking the effect on a monitor.  To reduce the problems involved in lighting a complex scene, Lighting Operator or Lighting Director need to plan out the whole effect with a paper and pencil or a computer drawing programme before the process of hanging and positioning of lights, is started. Lighting operator actually hang lights in the studio following instruction that indicate where the lights are place.  For this, it is required to draw or create lighting plot with all of lighting symbols and their position noted. Most TV production facilities will have a basic lighting grid for their studio that can be used as a starting point. These basic studio drawings should start with the grid lines shown later. They either indicate meters, yards, feet, or (more commonly) the position of the crisscrossing grid pipes near the ceiling where lights can be hung.

This workshop content was developed and structured mainly for Lighting Director or Lighting operators and practitioners in the studio or location productions lighting set-up.

Aims

To develop Lighting operator’s skill creating and understanding lighting plotting for TV studio production.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop, the participants must able to:

1. Apply general knowledge of creating lighting plotting to work activities.
2. Identify the types of lighting symbols for specific lighting instruments.
3. Develop physical Lighting plotting for the purpose of rigging.
4. Perform work activities with MS Visio software.
5. Produce, save, edit, print and email to the requestor.
6. Read, analyze and understand the content of the plotting.

Profile of Participants (15-20)

• At least 3-10 years experienced Technical TV operation.
• Ability to Understand, Speak and Write in Malay and English
