Asia Media Summit 2024

19TH ASIA MEDIA SUMMIT
The Asia Media Summit (AMS) is an annual international media conference organised by AIBD as its flagship event. Every year in consultation with the members, partners and various global media gurus, a theme guides the direction and delivery of the summit. Being a unique broadcasting event in Asia-Pacific, it attracts around 500 top-ranking broadcasters, decision makers, media professionals, regulators, scholars, and stakeholders from within and outside the region. Apart from plenary sessions and pre-summit workshops, Asia Media Summit also provides a platform for intergovernmental dialogues to uplift the benchmarks of the regional media industry.

In early September, I had the pleasure of giving a workshop in Bangkok for 16 participants  from independent production companies and from members of the staff at Thai PBS.

My specialty is children's programme – production and international trends. It's good to see that it has been increased capacity for production of own national children's program in Thailand.

The efforts put into the production of children's programmes around the world differ widely.

Children today must relate to global media to a far grater extent than before, but children need to take their own cultural ballast with them in order to be able to understand and take other cultures, values, and religions seriously and accept them.

What we offer children regarding nationally produced programs helps to strengthen their identity and their linguistic and cultural foundation.

The smaller the language and cultural area – the more important this is. The training of local producers is important to make these program as good as possible.

The workshop aims at providing the participants an introduction to children's perception of media, new trends as Transmedia, different age-groups,  as well as a introduction of working methods to make them excellent media-workers with and for children.

I had brought with me the best international programme, the participants had brought with them their own productions – and in addition, we worked with drama structure, documentaries, games – and had drama exercises with improvisation.

We had a full day with screening and discussion of participants' own programme.

This seems as a successful part of the workshop, in addition to an introduction of the discussion with my comments they had a very with active feedback on each other's programs. It is not so often the independent producers meet and have this kind of discussions – so they thought this was a great opportunity to get known and to learn for the feedback from their colleagues.

The participants was split into 3 groups with the task of drafting three programmes for children:  drama, documentaries and game show – and they showed great enthusiasm in the pitch of these projects – ranging from acting demonstration of sequences – to production via mobile phone of the hole program – with the participants themselves in all the roles – an impressive use of the new technology!

The participants had a variety of background, – and had a rare enthusiasm, commitment – and humor.

It's always nice to come to other countries and cultures and to feel communication in humor – humor brings us together across cultural barriers, and it's good to keep some childishness when you work with children programme.

A first-of-its-kind workshop, which it is hoped will serve as a pilot to be replicated in other countries, was held on Understanding Links Between Ozone Depletion and Climate Change. Organized jointly by HUM TV, AIBD, UNEP, CBA and Ministry of Climate Change, government of Pakistan, the workshop was held on September 6 and 7, as a timely precursor to World Ozone Day which is celebrated on September 16.

Fourteen TV producers and directors from across the Asia-Pacific region have explored the media’s role in spreading awareness about the links between ozone depletion and climate change.

From February 27-29, 2012, they took part in a three-day Asia-Pacific Media Workshop on the Linkages between Ozone Depletion and Climate Change organized by the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) with support from the OzonAction Programme of the United Nations Environment Programme – Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP-ROAP)...

“Designing and Producing Content for Internet” was the last regional workshop of the 3-year training activities plan dedicated to TV content, formats and visual dynamics supported by the French Government and AIBD. This 4-day activity took place from 16 to 19 January 2012 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and was hosted by the local TV channel SCTV.

The aim of this workshop was the adaptation and the creation of TV programmes for the Internet platform. This workshop focused on the importance of creating Web content from a TV programme and helped TV producers to develop skills in managing the challenges this content format can bring.

"Soap Opera: From the Idea to the Production" is the second regional workshop of the third year training programmes dedicated to TV content, formats and visual dynamics supported by the French Government and AIBD. From November 14 to 17, 2011 in Manila, Philippines, the local TV channel GMA hosted the workshop, which included participants from Media Prima (Malaysia), SCTV (Indonesia) and GMA.
