Enhancing Journalistic Competence in Child Online Protection Across ASEAN

Hanoi, 3 October 2023 – To improve journalistic reporting on Child online safety, AIBD and Voice of Vietnam (VOV) collaborated for an ASEAN-wide project. The goal of this regional training, which took place in Hanoi, was to give media professionals the resources that they needed to handle the mounting issues around child safety in the digital sphere.

VOV hosted the in-person component of the workshop, while AIBD facilitated key remote sessions, which emphasized the ethical considerations in reporting on sensitive topics related to online threats against children. AIBD invited renowned regional cybersecurity expert Mr. Philip Victor, who offered valuable insights on the complexities of child online protection, including practical advice on how journalists can safeguard themselves and their families from potential cyber threats.

To further add value to the workshop, Ms. Alma Yu Cheng from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) discussed ITU’s recent initiatives in child online protection. She highlighted the collaboration with Governments across the Asia-Pacific region, emphasizing the positive impact of these partnerships on improving child safety online.

This focus on cybersecurity and ethical journalism, facilitated by AIBD, formed the core of the workshop. It not only provided journalists with technical knowledge but also deepened their understanding of their responsibilities in promoting child online protection. Over 30 journalists from ASEAN member states participated in the workshop, which also included training on creating Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to advocate for child safety and drive positive social change.

In his opening remarks, VOV Deputy General Director, Mr. Ngo Minh Hien, underscored the significance of the media’s role in safeguarding children online. “The Voice of Vietnam is proud to lead in this vital cause, contributing to efforts that will protect future generations from online abuse,” he said.

This initiative, supported by AIBD’s leadership and the collaboration of regional organizations such as VOV and ITU, highlights the collective responsibility of media professionals in creating safer online environments for children.
