AIBD/IPDC In- country workshop on Safety for Journalists: Risks, Threats & Opportunities

Background
Across the world, journalists are increasingly faced with threats, defamation, harassments, which often have political and economic undertones to pressurize journalists and media
organizations for the investigation of any corruption or social inefficiency. Often, journalists come across dilemmas in decision-making that define ethical behavior boundaries while crafting their stories. There is a thin line between legally correct and ethically correct.

One wrong step can lead to a series of problems. Generally, the social rules may have the intent of offering clear guidance, but this is usually hammered out in test case, after test case. An intensive course in safety for journalists by assessing various kinds of risks and threats is an important starting point for contemporary journalists.

Aims & Objectives
This four-day course will help participants understand most frequent questions on the matters of libel, privacy, emotional distress, newsgathering, intellectual property, regulation of the media – electronically and in print — and where a reporter’s privilege begins and ends. The intensive hybrid workshop will help participants understand the various risks in the journalistic world. Some of the key objectives of this workshop are:

– Boundaries of Freedom of Information
– Setting up editorial policies which are in line with law & ethical codes

Execution Strategy
This workshop will be executed in hybrid mode, hosted from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Media practitioners from Malaysia will join the workshop physically while AIBD will invite professionals
from other parts of the world to attend this four-day workshop. Experts from Malaysia will deliver their presentations in person while institute will engage several internationally renowned journalists remotely to share their case studies.

Profile of Participants
Activity will be invite media professionals i.e. reporters, fixers, and other production crew who work in different hostile situations. The participants will be from Africa, ASEAN, SAARC and Pacific region who will join remotely, while professionals from Malaysia would join in person.
