AIBD/IPDC/UNESCO Regional Workshop on Capacity Building for Safety of Journalists In Central Asian Republics

The Regional Workshop on Capacity Building for Safety of Journalists In Central Asian Republics organised by AIBD and the International Programme for Development of Communication (IPDC) and the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 13-15 October 2014.

The workshop brought 10 participants, which include multi-skilled journalists from traditional and new media (radio, television, print, bloggers) from broadcasting organisations from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The workshop aimed to allow participants to acquire knowledge and apply the key concepts of risk analysis to establish safety indicators with simple procedures for online and before reporting from different venues.

The consultant for the workshop was Ms Marina Maximova, and featured guest lecturers on legal regulations and Internet security, as well as a presentation by Mr. Sergey Karpov, NPO, Communication and Information, UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

During the workshop, participants were told about the Plan of Action of the United Nations to ensure the safety of journalists, the international best practices for legal safety of journalists and concepts of network security and protection of personal data. Throughout the workshop, the participants split into group to discuss different scenarios that may be played out in their line of work based on the concepts described.
