SESSION 3: Technology Innovations: Driving Broadcasting to New Horizons

With stiff competition and demanding audiences, broadcasters are using social media to generate content and create excitement that will attract and retain viewership. Twitter, Blippy, You Tube, Flickr, Blogs, MySpace and Facebook are changing how viewers are developing their own personal broadcast and getting engaged with media and the community. Are TV programmes, particularly in news and public affairs, adapting well to social media? What are some winning strategies to engage viewers who can now create their own content, read information and watch programmes on their own time? What are their implications?

As the broadcast industry migrates to digital, it is seeing technology shifts and innovations that impact audience reach, content production, and business models. Multiple delivery platforms are offering broadcasters new ways to interact and engage with audiences. How prepared are broadcasters in tapping technology innovations such as IPTV, open Internet television, HDTV, 3DTV, and mobile television? Is TV going to be the web or vice versa? Which one is appropriate and cost effective? Which one delivers maximum outputs?

Mr Sharad Sadhu Director, Technical Department, Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Sharad Sadhu is the Director of the ABU Technical Department. He joined the ABU in 1993 as a Senior Engineer and took up his present position in 2007. Sharad has been instrumental in developing a strong base for the spectrum management and regulation activities in the ABU, and in introducing mobile and ICT technologies. He has more than 40 years’ experience covering all areas of TV and radio broadcast engineering. |

Mr Kwak, Duk-Hoon CEO and President, Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), Koreaons Environment Programme (UNEP) Dr. Kwak, Duk Hoon is the President & CEO of Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS). He previously served as the Vice President of Korean Broadcasters Association (KBA) and Chairman of Smart Learning Forum in Korea. He was also Chairman of the Consultative Body of Information Techniques for Universities from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. One of his many published books is “The Understanding of Ubiquitous”. |

Dr Sanggil Lee Research Fellow, Technical Research Institute, Korean Broadcasting System, Republic of Korea Dr Sanggil Lee has been working for Technical Research Institute, KBS since 1983. He was responsible for the Technical Research Institute as an Executive Director from April 2008 to June 2010. He contributed to various R&D fields – teletext, digital broadcasting, multimedia broadcasting, sports effecting system, and so on. He was a visiting researcher at NHK, Japan in 1995, and ATTC (Advanced Television Test Center), USA in 2000. He is also a Vice President of Korean Society of Broadcast Engineers, which is an academic organization. |

Dr Kazuyoshi Shogen Executive Research Engineer, NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), Japan Kazuyoshi Shogen is Executive Research Engineer in NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories. Since 1982, he was engaged in research on broadcasting satellite system, especially on contoured beam antennas for Japanese direct broadcasting satellites. In 1998-2003, he worked at the NHK Engineering Administration Department on media planning and international affairs working with ABU, ITU-R and APT. In 2003, he was transferred to his current post. He previously served as chairman of the ABU Technical Committee and vice chairman of the ITU-R SG6 WP6S. |

Ms Kathryn S Brown Strategic Development, Commercial Radio Australia Kathryn Brown is Digital Project Manager for Commercial Radio Australia’s technical advisory committee to further develop the DAB+ platform and assist in developing the technical framework to continue the roll out of digital radio services in Australia. Kath works with retailers, manufacturers, the automotive industry and mobile phone handset manufacturers to introduce DAB+ into phones and cars. Kath has worked in newspapers and radio for most of her career. |

Mr Tran Nam Trung Chairman and CEO of VTV Broadcom, Vietnam Tran Nam Trung is Chairman and CEO of VTV Broadcom, a company focused on new technology for Vietnam Television as well as for the Vietnam market. He served in various capacities in VTV: IT programmer, Head of IT Applicant Department of Technical Production Center, and Director of Broadcast and Telecomm Service Center. In June 2010, he was appointed Chairman and CEO of VTV Broadcom. He is a PhD Candidate at the Vietnam Post Telecom Institute. |
