WORLD TV AWARDS 2011

The World Television Awards are open to all broadcasters in Asia, Pacific, Europe, Africa, and North & South America from public, private sector and freelance producers.

For 2011, the two World TV Awards categories are:
1) "TV documentary contributing to conflict resolution" - Category "Humanity"
2) "Protecting Ozone layer and Combating Climate Change" - Category "Science/Environment"

The World TV Awards are supported by United Nations Environment Programme OzonAction, Arab States Broadcasting Union, Radio TV Malaysia, Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, Islamic Broadcasting Union and AIBD.

AIBD-UNESCO-IPDC workshop on Capacity Building of TV News Reporters for Environmental Sustainability

Environmental sustainability, notably climate change, has become an unprecedented concern in the 21st century, and Central Asia was no exception.

AIBD-UNESCO-IPDC In-country workshop on Capacity Building of TV News Reporters for Environmental Sustainability was held from 17 to 23 November 2010 at Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research (KIMEP) in Almaty. A local environmental non-governmental organization Central Asia Regional Environmental Centre (CAREC) partnered AIBD and the host organization KIMEP to successfully conclude the project.

The AIBD/CBA In-Country Workshop on Role of Media in Disaster Reporting was held in Islamabad, Pakistan between 3 and 6 Dec 2010 for broadcast journalists and executives.


I was invited by the sponsoring organizations to act as the resource person for the workshop. Planning and preparation during the pre-workshop period went smoothly, and our host in Islamabad, Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), did an admirable job providing all the support required.

Several pre-summit workshops/seminars will also be held in the same hotel on 23 May 2011.

We are expecting 500 top-ranking broadcasters, decision makers, media professionals, regulators, scholars, and stakeholders from Asia, Pacific, Europe, Africa, North America and the Arab World to attend the Asia Media Summit and to examine issues that impact the highly competitive and dynamic media environment.

Challenges to Public Service Broadcasting

The media landscape in Bhutan offers many opportunities as well as challenges for those involved in reform.   For a country which introduced television as recently as 1999, and which until a couple of years ago had only one (state-owned) newspaper, the spurt in media-related activity, especially since the advent of popular democracy in 2008, has been striking.  It is not surprising, therefore, that attention has now turned to strengthening public service broadcasting in this Himalayan idyll.

1st Pacific Media Partnership

The 1st Pacific Media Partnership Forum was held successfully in Tonga on 20-27 August 2010. The event offered media practitioners in the region concepts and tools that will enhance capacity in various aspects of broadcasting critical in responding to the rapidly changing media landscape.

More than 50 media practitioners from 13 countries participated in six seminars and workshops covering convergent journalism, marketing and financial management, media’s role in natural disasters, public service broadcasting, media regulations and initiatives to build a vibrant broadcast industry in the region. The Tonga Broadcasting Commission hosted these activities in Nuku’alofa.
