Ministers agree to take collective stand against disinformation

One of the major outcomes of the 16th Asia Media Summit in Siem Reap, Cambodia is the Angkor Anti-Fake News Initiative. During the sideline ministerial meeting all the six ministers agreed to take a collective stand on critical media issues and, in particular, to discuss a way forward in combating the spread of disinformation/fake news across media platforms, and its negative effects on society.

Various perspectives on regulation as a mechanism to effectively counter the spread of disinformation/fake news were presented during the plenary session on “Disinformation and New Media” at the 16th Asia Media Summit in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The session, in collaboration with UNESCO, was moderated by Dr. Ming Kuok Lim, Advisor for Communication and Information, UNESCO, Jakarta.

“Amid the spread of fake news, media must exercise greater responsibility while we pursue more media literacy efforts”, Cambodian Information Minister Dr Khieu Kanharith said.

 

He admitted that combating fake news remains a challenge in the country where the use of internet and social media has dramatically increased.
